Alabama Power crews are making more headway in getting electricity restored throughout northern Jefferson County.

As of 11 a.m., about 2,500 customers were still without power locally. That’s down from roughly 3,400 an hour earlier, out of about 10,300 throughout the entire state.
“It looks like the Gardendale area is a bit of a hot spot for us,” spokesman Michael Sznajderman said.
The local area did have a bit more ice buildup on trees and structures than other areas, and as the ice melts, it sometimes falls and hits a powerline, Sznajderman added.
The number of customers without power has fluctuated throughout the night and into the morning hours, partly because of crews reporting outages that were missed earlier. The Gardendale service center, which serves Pinson, Fultondale, Morris and points north in Jefferson County, saw as many as 5,000 customers without power just after midnight.
Overall, the storm has not caused as many outages for Alabama Power as a typical severe-weather outbreak in the spring or fall, Sznajderman said.
“All totaled, this has been very modest for us in terms of outages,” he said.
