Weather: Back into the deep freeze. Today’s the day that the lower half of Alabama deals with a historic winter storm. Snow accumulations of as much as an inch will be seen as far north as Shelby County, with areas south of Montgomery seeing as much as four inches plus ice accumulation as well. Locally, though, we will see no more than a dusting of snow today with highs only in the upper 20s. Skies will clear out tonight with lows in the mid teens. Wednesday will be sunny, but highs will barely reach the freezing mark. We’ll see a steady warm-up for the rest of the week.

Pinson woman’s body found. The body of Lula Skanes was found Monday morning off Sweeney Hollow Road near Pinson, not far from her home. Skanes, a 66-year-old woman who suffered from dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, was found in a wooded area by her son. Skanes had been missing since Friday evening. Foul play is not suspected, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

Gotcha! Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies caught the suspect in a pair of robberies not long after the second one happened on Monday. Billy Ross Sullivan of Pinson was arrested shortly after a robbery was reported at Winn Dixie in Pinson; that came about 20 minutes after a similar robbery at a CVS in Grayson Valley. Sullivan admitted to the robberies when caught, plus another earlier in the month at Pinson’s Food Giant. Sullivan is jailed on $120,000 bond and charged with two counts of robbery so far.

Sports: Homecoming for Desmond Jennings. The former Pinson Valley star athlete, now a player for the Tampa Bay Rays, returns to his alma mater to be honored tonight as the Indians host Hewitt-Trussville in basketball. Jennings remains the school’s leading scorer in hoops. He’ll be reunited with former coach Mike Dutton, now coaching at Hewitt. Boys basketball: Gardendale defeated Pleasant Grove 52-43 on Monday night, behind Allen Williams’ 14 points and Quantariuus Williams’ five blocks. The Rockets host Cullman tonight. Elsewhere, Mortimer Jordan finally got the better of Corner for the first victory in three tries, as the Devils beat the Yellow Jackets 59-49. The two teams scored more points in the fourth quarter alone than they did in the previous three periods.
