A Morris man died Friday afternoon as a result of injuries sustained in an altercation.
Gregory Steven Cato, 50, died after the Glenwood Fire Department responded to a call in the 2400 block of Talley Road.
Sgt. Jack Self of the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office said that they were asked to come along on the call by Glenwood Fire because of the reported altercation.
“The family said he was drinking and had become combative, and was fighting with the family. They called a neighbor over, and when [the neighbor] came, Cato pushed the neighbor away and hit his head on a dresser,” Self said.
When first responders arrived, Cato was unconscious and not breathing. He was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital in Birmingham, where he was dead on arrival.
Deputies discussed the matter with the district attorney’s office on Saturday as a matter of protocol, but Self said they anticipate the death will be ruled accidental. “It’s doubtful that any charges will be filed,” he said.
