Mortimer Jordan High School and the Burkett Center for the Multi-Handicapped were closed today because of power outages.
Nez Calhoun, spokeswoman for Jefferson County Schools, said students at the schools were sent home this morning on buses due to the power failure.
She added that students will make up the missed school day, but the school board has not yet announced the date of the make-up day.
The power failure has also caused tonight’s scheduled basketball games between Walker and Mortimer Jordan to be postponed. Because they are Class 5A area games, they will be made up at a later date. Jordan’s wrestling team will be in action tonight, though, in a multi-team match at Oak Mountain.
A spokesperson with Alabama Power said that in addition to the schools, about 460 customers in the Morris area were without power today. She estitmated that electricity should be restored in the area by 5:30 p.m.
