WALLACE STATE BASKETBALL: Lady Lions edge No. 22 Three Rivers, 87-82

College finals have come and gone, but Wallace State’s women’s basketball team still had a test to take on Tuesday.
And much to coach Ron Burdette’s liking, his Lady Lions passed with flying colors.
Brandee Busenlehner set the table for a 24-point performance with a 6-of-11 clip from long range, and Wallace State earned its second win in Memphis in as many days, defeating No. 22 Three Rivers (Mo.) in a close 87-82 contest.
After trailing by as many as 14 points, Three Rivers put on the press and trimmed the deficit to three with a little more than a minute to go. That was about the time the Lady Lions kicked it back into gear, using some late free throws and a 3-pointer from Busenlehner, a Locust Fork native, with seven seconds remaining to seal the deal on Wallace State’s 12-2 start.
“It was a war back and forth. They’re the No. 22-ranked team for a reason,” Burdette said of his squad’s latest foe. “But the girls hung in there and got the job done.”
Wallace State’s pair of Morgans followed up Monday’s superb showings with equally impressive contributions Tuesday. Morgan Pearson put up 19 points, while Morgan Smith, a Cullman High graduate, was good for 16.
The Lady Lions will head back home to host Wallace State-Selma at 4 p.m. Friday.
