Football: Pinson Valley’s Gibson, Fultondale’s Lawrence are ASWA finalists

Two local high school football players have made into the top three in their classifications for the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s Back and Lineman of the Year awards.

Nick Gibson, the junior running back from Pinson Valley who ran for more than 2,200 yards in 12 games this season, is one of the top three for Class 5A Back of the Year. Gibson will compete for the award with Tyler Johnson, the quarterback from state champion Spanish Fort; and Dantley Coker, running back from Southside-Gadsden.

Kadarrius Lawrence, the 295-pound senior lineman from Fultondale, is in the top three for Class 2A Lineman of the Year. He was the key to an offensive line that cleared the way for more thna 3,000 rushing yards this season. Lawrence will go up against lineman Baltazar Rubio of Tanner and linebacker Trent Thrash of Fyffe. All are seniors.

Both are also eligible for the ASWA’s Super 12 team and the highest award, Mr. Football. The winners will be announced at the association’s awards banquet on January 15 in Montgomery.
