ALL-STATE FOOTBALL TEAM: Bearcats’ Moon follows in Winfrey’s footsteps as 1st teamer

Published 11:01 pm Saturday, December 21, 2013

Trey Moon has come a long way from being the shy guy at Cullman High tasked with replacing Andrew Winfrey.

When Winfrey suffered severe injuries from a car accident not long after both of their sophomore seasons, Moon was understandably intimidated at the thought of filling the rather large shoes left behind by his close friend and teammate. Yet, slowly but surely, the safety began to find his voice, as well as his place in the Bearcat defense, tackling a sharp learning curve to garner All-State honorable mention status at the conclusion of his junior campaign.

But as great as his 2012 turned out to be, it was only a glimpse of what the “Moon Man” had to offer. In 2013, the fun-loving footballer continued his meteoric rise, clearly taking over as a leader in the locker room and letting his smashmouth style of play do all the talking on Friday nights.

Now, nearly a month since the end of the season, the football world is talking back — and it’s telling Moon he isn’t just an honorable mention anymore. This year, the Alabama Sports Writers Association deemed him deserving of a first-team spot at defensive back in Class 5A.

The last Black and Gold player to make an All-State first team, you ask? Why, that would be Winfrey. Of course.

“I thought he knew what our expectations were. We needed a guy to really step up and be a leader,” longtime coach Mark Britton said of Moon, the headliner in a group of four other Cullman kids who made the top squad as honorable mentions. “It’s very difficult, especially with the circumstances we had, but I thought he did an outstanding job. He came in there and never missed a step.”

It doesn’t take much time around Moon to notice his brain isn’t wired like the average athlete’s.

The brainiac’s excellence in the classroom shines through in the way he goes about his business on the gridiron, meticulously analyzing opponents’ defenses in the blink of an eye. From there, Moon managed to make split-second decisions for every level of the defense in a tried-and-true system that works best when every single piece of the puzzle is in its rightful place.

And in almost all instances this fall, Moon made the right move, resulting in a sensational stat-line that most certainly helped the Bearcats enjoy a memorable season unlike any other.

By the time the dust settled in the second round of the playoffs, Moon had his hand in an astronomic 153 total tackles (99 solo, 54 assisted and four for loss) and hauled in three interceptions. To top it off, the heavy-hitter forced three fumbles and recovered two.

“You hear coaches talk about how a player makes kids around him better. That’s the perfect thing you can say about Trey,” Britton said. “He can help get so many people lined up. He can get things operating smoothly. Then, in a 25-second span, you have the ability to maybe change a call.

“He see and studies the games just like he does in the classroom, and he’s outstanding in both. When you talk to him, he’s such a great kid and so intelligent that I don’t think all of his teachers would really expect him to be as good of a football player as he is.”

As most elite athletes tend to do, Moon was at his best when his team needed it most.

Following three uncharacteristically sloppy quarters of football in the season opener at Walker, Moon turned the tide back in the Black and Gold’s favor by picking off a pass on the very first play of the final frame. With the momentum firmly in hand, Cullman proceeded to erase a 10-0 deficit by scoring twice in the last 12 minutes, the clincher a 6-yard scamper by Tyler Glenn with only 18 seconds remaining.

Both of Moon’s other interceptions came at crucial times — and from inside his own 10-yard line — in the first half of the Bearcats’ thrilling 14-6 victory versus Hartselle. He also put his own special mark on the program’s first win over its heated rival since 2007 by being the first man to the scene on a vital fourth-down stop late in the third quarter.

“You almost expected him to make those plays,” Britton said of Moon’s clutch contributions. “You don’t ever want to take him for granted, but I think he had high expectations of himself. He continually got better throughout the year, and now there are some folks showing college interest. You never know.

“He just really did a super job for us at safety the last couple years. We’re going to really miss him at graduation.”

With all the Black and Gold lost last spring, Britton could hear the rumblings throughout the community that the football team was in for a down year. Yet, as Cullman’s new all-time winningest coach has done throughout his lengthy tenure, Britton and his seasoned staff just plugged in new players, stayed true to their successful system and watched on as their “blue-collar team” put together a campaign for the ages.

Seniors Mason Jones (wide receiver), Glenn (athlete) and Chaz Brouillette (offensive line), as well as sophomore Justin Patterson (defensive end), were all key cogs in the first-ever Bearcat season to include triumphs over long-standing rivals Walker, Hartselle, Russellville and Athens. Consequentially, the quartet were all handpicked as All-State honorable mentions at their respective positions.

Jones was easily the Black and Gold’s biggest and most reliable playmaker on offense. Despite being sidelined for the playoffs after suffering a nasty concussion in the second half of Cullman’s regular season finale, the always-smiling senior still posted some sky-high stats, snagging 65 passes for 770 yards and a trio of touchdowns.

If it was a close contest — which is when this latest Bearcat bunch thrived — Jones was to be counted on.

The big-play threat turned 10 catches into 160 yards and a touchdown against Hartselle and roped in consecutive receptions of 18, 27 and 7 yards on the Black and Gold’s game-winning possession to cap off a nine-catch, 122-yard performance versus Athens. Jones and his steady hands hit the field for one play on defense, too, intercepting the Golden Eagles’ last-ditch Hail Mary as time expired to seal a 16-13 victory.

Following in the footsteps of two-time honorable mention quarterback Zac Crocker couldn’t have been easy for Glenn. The first-year starting senior sure did make it look like a whole lot of fun, though.

After stunning Walker Week 1 with his last-minute heroics, Glenn rarely let up, doing everything asked of him in offensive coordinator Kenny Gleaton’s oft-demanding spread attack. He wrapped up his career at Cullman by completing 193 of his 324 pass attempts for 2,155 yards, 14 touchdowns and 11 interceptions.

Glenn’s most spectacular highlight arguably came in a game where he didn’t throw a single touchdown. He did catch one, though, a 7-yard scoring strike from wide receiver Auston Neal with 32 seconds on the clock to put the Bearcats on top for good against Athens. Glenn wasn’t just sitting around twiddling his thumbs before saving the day, either. He finished the night 26 of 40 with 250 passing yards, 62 of which came on the game-winning drive.

Athlete was the perfect place to put Glenn on the All-State Team considering his massive contributions as a punter. With the 6-foot-3 signal-caller booming 43 punts a total distance of 1,361 yards, Britton felt more than comfortable putting the Black and Gold’s field position in Glenn’s hands time and time again.

Of course, it’s hard for any good quarterback to operate without a trusty offensive line, which is precisely where Brouillette comes in.

The two-sport athlete — he’s also one of the state’s best prep divers — used his 6-foot-3, 220-pound frame to keep Glenn protected to the best of his ability. Brouillette was beastly with 58 knockdowns and was only bypassed for sacks two times in more than 340 pass attempts.

While Moon, Jones, Glenn and Brouillette will all be gone come springtime, Patterson still has another two seasons to sport Cullman colors, a fact Britton couldn’t be happier about.

Patterson was simply astounding in his sophomore season, trailing only Moon in the team’s tackling department with 123 total (79 solo and 44 assisted). An eye-popping 20 of those tackles were for loss, including two sacks, the most entertaining of the flying-squirrel variety at a critical juncture against Athens. The Golden Eagle quarterback initially escaped Patterson’s clutches on the play, but the defender’s relentless pursuit never slowed, resulting in a demoralizing 12-yard loss.

As if all that weren’t enough, Patterson also caused four fumbles.

“It was really a fun year to be coaching this bunch,” said Britton, whose Bearcats extended the program’s streak of first-round playoff wins to eight. “Our kids really answered the bell every time we put them in a challenge. They won some very close games. I really like the mental toughness of our kids to stick with everything and stick with the gameplan. We played and competed to the last second.”
