It’s not Two-Fer Tuesday, it’s just plain Tuesday — but it’s 11 days until the Iron Bowl…
Weather: Cooler. It will be sunny, but highs will struggle to climb past 60 today. Nighttime lows will be in the upper 30s. Wednesday’s forecast will be pretty much the same as today.
MO Meets. Supporters of an effort to annex much of Mt. Olive into Gardendale, in an effort to keep their schoolchildren in the city’s forthcoming school system, held a meeting Monday night that was attended by about 100 people. Craig Goolsby and Tracy Calvert, two of the leaders of the group Mo Matters, presented various scenarios whereby students now bound for Bragg Middle and Gardendale High could stay on that path. Out of the seven possibilities, the one the group favors involves a referendum whereby only the part of Mt. Olive currently zoned for Gardendale schools would vote on whether or not to annex. Those attending expressed concerns about the level of police and fire protection an expanded Gardendale could provide, and how the existing Mt. Olive Fire District would be affected. We’ll have more on this meeting later today at njeffersonnews.com.
Murder suspect named. The man who police say shot and killed his girlfriend near Pinson has been identified as Cedric Devon Lowe. The 54-year-old Center Point resident will be formally charged today with killing Tyna Delmay Spivery in a shooting Sunday afternoon in a neighborhood between Pinson and Clay. Spivery’s sister was also shot and remains hospitalized.
Pinson man dies in crash. The victim of a one-car wreck on Sweeney Hollow Road has been identified as Clarence Williams Jr., 47. His car left the road in the early morning hours Sunday, hitting a fence and then a utility pole. The car flipped over several times. Williams was declared dead at the crash scene.
Sports: More overtime. Pinson Valley’s boys basketball team seems to like playing so much, 32 minutes per game isn’t enough. The Indians took the game into extra time, then won it with two free throws by Donevan Waldrop with 4.5 seconds to go for a 63-62 win over Shades Valley at home. Tonight, the Tribe travels to Hewitt-Trussville to face a Huskies squad coached by Mike Dutton — the man whose name adorns Pinson’s gym. Elsewhere, Corner travels to Tarrant, where new Wildcat coach Chris Berry has brought the same high-scoring game plan he used at Bragg Middle School to great success. Also, Gardendale goes to Oak Mountain, Mortimer Jordan has its home opener against Pleasant Grove, and Locust Fork travels to J.B. Pennington.
