We’ve made it to Friday once again…

Weather: Rain returns. We’ll see a short wave of showers pass through this afternoon, with a high around 60 and a 60 percent chance of rain. The rain tapers off in the evening, just in time for high school football, with a low in the lower 50s. Saturday will be mostly cloudy and warmer with highs in the upper 60s and lows in the lower 60s. Sunday will see showers and storms, some of which may be severe, with highs in the lower 70s and in the middle 50s. Cool temperatures return for the work week.

Obama offers a fix for mass cancellations. As concerns mount over millions who have had their current health insurance canceled because of conflicts with standards imposed by ObamaCare, the president on Thursday offered what he believed to be a temporary solution, allowing state insurance commissioners to avoid enforcing rules for one year that prevent certain insurance plans from being offered. But opponent’s of ObamaCare quickly countered that his “fix” may only make matters even worse, and even while Obama was announcing the change in a press conference, a spokesman for a group representing insurance companies said the move could actually backfire, causing higher premiums for the existing plans. Moreover, political opponents questioned whether Obama has the constitutional right to avoid enforcing a law simply through what administration spokesmen call “enforcement prerogative,” saying the president can’t choose whether or not to enforce laws he disagrees with. Meanwhile, one of those who helped craft ObamaCare told Fox News interviewer Megyn Kelly that continued problems in getting people to sign up for the so-called exchanges could present a “death spiral” where those participating are sick an forcing high premiums.

Sports: Round two. The second week of the AHSAA high school football playoffs take place tonight, as Pinson Valley travels to McAdory in Class 5A, while ninth-ranked Fultondale goes to No. 2 Lanett. Our big game tonight is with the Indians over in McCalla… Basketball: Locust Fork’s girls opened their season Thursday night with a 59-39 win over visiting Briarwood Christian, but the Hornet boys were not as fortunate, losing 72-48 despite 29 points from forward Kyle Hornbuckle. Elsewhere, Hayden’s girls won big over Ragland in a tournament at Ashville; they’ll host traditional rival Corner tonight before playing in the tournament finals on Saturday. And Gardendale’s girls opened the campaign with a 50-45 loss at Pleasant Grove; the boys’s game was postponed because the Spartans are still alive in the football playoffs.
