Retiring Rep. Spencer Bachus (R-6th) lashed out at President Obama and the Affordable Health Care Act on Friday, as he voted in favor of a House bill that would let people stick with their current health insurance plan if they wish — putting into law a promise Obama made repeatedly on the campaign trail, but which has not come to pass.

The “Keep Your Health Care Plan Act” passed the House by a 261-157 margin Friday. Thirty-nine Democrats crossed the aisle to vote with Republicans on the bill, which is also known as the Upton Amendment for sponsor Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.).

While Bachus lauded Upton’s bill, he also called for the Affordable Care Act — also known as ObamaCare — to be scrapped entirely as unworkable.

“ObamaCare is one of the biggest political fiascos that I have ever seen,” Bachus said in a prepared statement. “It was always a big government ‘solution’ and we know those do not work. If the President believes things can be fixed by a new website or band-aid tweaks, he is wrong.

“The basic structure of ObamaCare is unsound and the lasting answer is to replace it with common sense reforms that will improve affordability and accessibility without putting federal bureaucrats in Washington in charge of your private health care.”

Obama said in a press conference Thursday that he would use his discretion to permit state insurance commissioners to allow health plans that don’t full comply with ObamaCare regulations to be sold for another year, if those commissioners agree. But even as Obama was announcing his decision, a spokesman for a health insurance industry trade group said that the move might have the effect of increasing premiums even more.

Obama has threatened to veto the Upton bill if it reaches his desk.
