Trick or treat!…

Weather: Timing couldn’t be worse. Your little ghosts and goblins are likely to get rained on tonight, and maybe blown by gusty winds as well. A cold front moving in from the northwest will bring a line of showers and thunderstorms, with a slight chance of some severe weather later tonight. The heaviest weather could arrive as early as 7 p.m. Highs will be in the upper 70s with lows in the lower 60s. Rain chances are 40 for this afternoon, 100 percent for tonight. Friday will see rain moving out in the morning with highs in the lower 70s.

Festival time tonight. A number of churches and similar groups are having Halloween or fall festivals tonight (plus one in Mt. Olive on Saturday). Here’s a list of the ones we know about, but you might want to check before you go if the storms make an early appearance.

“Whatever…” So said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sibelius in testimony before a Congressional committee – even as at the same time the healthcare.gov website for the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, went down yet again. Her exasperated response came after grilling by Rep. Greg Harper (R-MS) about how much responsibility that President Obama should bear for the early failures of the new law’s implementation. Sibelius did say that she expects the website, the centerpiece of the new law, to be fixed by the end of November; it was supposed to be ready by Oct. 1. “I told the president we were ready to go. Clearly, I was wrong,” she said.

Sports: Red Sox wrap it up. Boston has won its third World Series in the last 10 years, but it’s the first time that the Sox have clinched the Fall Classic at Fenway Park in almost a century – since 1918, to be exact. The pennant came with a 6-1 win Wednesday night over St. Louis, thanks in large part to a three-run double off the Green Monster by Shane Victorino. To no one’s surprise, David “Big Papi” Ortiz was named the most valuable player, after batting .688 in the Series… Football: Wildcats close out regular season. Hopefully the only tornadoes that ninth-ranked Fultondale will deal with in tonight’s football game are those of the host Parrish team, as the Cats travel for a game that was moved up from Friday to tonight. They will then have to wait to see how Ranburne and Walter Wellborn do tomorrow night to break the three-way tie atop the region standings. Fultondale has the inside track on taking the top spot and home-field advantage for the first week of the playoffs.
