A second person has died from injuries suffered in a crash Thursday on Carson Road, and both of those killed have now been identified.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said that Amber U. Smith, 28, died on Friday evening at UAB Hospital. Smith was driving a Geo Metro sedan that was hit by a GMC Terrain SUV driven by Christina Witherstine, 55, of Gardendale.

Authorities said that Witherstine was attempting to pass another vehicle in a no-passing zone on Carson Road near Indian Valley Road, just outside the Fultondale city limits. Smith’s car was coming in the opposite direction; her car swerved into a guard rail, then bounced back and hit the SUV. Both vehicles then hit the vehicle that Witherstine was originally trying to pass.

Wiherstine died while in surgery on Thursday morning, about two hours after the crash. Her name was withheld until next of kin could be notified.
