A sizzling Guntersville team routed Locust Fork 30-0 on homecoming Friday night behind three touchdowns from Jordan Bentley and the defense’s second shutout of the season.

The Wildcats (7-1, 5-1 region) extended their winning streak to six games, a stretch in which they’ve outscored their opponents 225-70.

Bentley, the Wildcats’ standout sophomore running back, became the program’s single-season touchdown leader.

His three scores give him 26 on the year, breaking Jarrod Looney’s mark of 25 set in 12 games during the 1995 season. Bentley finished with 185 yards rushing on 27 attempts.

Bentley raced 44 yards for his first TD of the night. Edson Jaramillo’s extra point made it 7-0 with 2:59 left in the first period.

Late in the second quarter, Bentley capped a five-play, 60-yard drive with a 23-yard TD run. He made some nice cuts near the Guntersville sideline to elude the Hornets’ defense with 3:07 on the clock. The extra point failed.

The Wildcats burned all three of their timeouts on the ensuing series and forced a punt. Guntersville took possession at the Hornets’ 47 and marched to the 3, but settled for Jaramillo’s 21-yard field goal that made it 16-0 with 2.5 seconds left in the opening half.

There wasnt a lot of good news for Locust Fork in the game, but the first drive of the second half was their best of the night.

The Hornets kept the ball for 11 plays, driving from their 38 to Guntersville’s 32. But on fourth down, Wildcat lineman Victor Olvera burst into the backfield and sacked Kyle Hornbuckle for a 5-yard loss.

Guntersville’s offense took over at its 37 and covered 63 yards in eight plays. Bentley closed the drive with a tackle-breaking 7-yard TD run to establish the new record.

Jaramillo kicked it to 23-0 with 2:08 remaining in the third quarter.

The Wildcats wrapped up the scoring with a 12-play, 68-yard drive that drained 6:10 off the clock. Reserve running back Logan Brooks scored on a 10-yard run with five minutes left in the game.

Guntersville’s Ben Bolan recovered a Hornets’ fumble at the Locust Fork 25, but the Cats turned it over on downs at the 15 with 33.7 seconds left.

The Wildcats’ defense limited Locust Fork to just six first downs and 104 total yards.

Guntersville rolled up 345 yards, including 289 on the ground. Senior quarterback Gunner Lemons ran 11 times for 65 yards. He was 5-of-9 passing for 56 yards.

Locust Fork (5-3, 3-3 region) needs a win at home over St. Clair County next week, in what is essentially a play-in game for a Class 4A playoff berth.
