A shooting incident at the United States Capitol resulted in injuries to a police officer, and caused chaos on Capitol Hill.

The incident caused the building to be put into lockdown, and Congressional sessions were immediately halted. The lockdown started at about 2:20 p.m. Eastern Time when gunfire was first reported, and ended roughly 40 minutes later.

ABC News is reporting that a female suspect has been shot and killed by police, and that a Capitol Police office has been injured, apparently when the suspect’s vehicle hit the officer’s cruiser.

Members of Congress reported hearing multiple gunshots as they stood on a balcony outside the lobby of the office of House Speaker John Boehner. Capitol personnel were then alerted to shelter in place.

Multiple reports from Washington news media say that the suspect first tried to ram barricades at the White House with her car, and when police gave chase, she sped toward the Capitol. She struck a Capitol Police car during the chase, doing extensive damage to the cruiser’s poassenger side. The Capitol Police chief said the suspect was finally stopped a few blocks away at the intersection of Second Street and Constutiton Avenue N.E.

The chief said there was no apparent ties to terrorist activity, and that the incident appeared to be isolated.
