- Sophomore De'Qua Houston (20) saw a good bit of action for Gardendale Friday night, as he tallied 69 yards and a touchdown in their 56-0 rout of Woodlawn.
Gardendale coaches and players were expecting a tussle with an athletic Woodlawn team. But after the Colonels suspended six players on Friday, the game turned into a rout and ended with shortened quarters and JV players as the Rockets scored a 56-0 win Friday.
Juan Jackson scored on first-quarter runs of 21 yards and one yard, and Hunter Crook connected with Austin Hicks for touchdown passes of 41 yards and one yard.
Gardendale saw 10 different player carry the ball during the game, led by sophomore Dequa Houston with 69 yards on five carries, including a 9-yard TD. Fellow 10th-grader Tye Dunklin ran for 51 yards on two rushes.
Jay Washington opened the scoring two minutes into the game on a 46-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown. Woodlawn fumbled the ball eight times in the game, and lost possession on six of them.
Sam Peacock was true on all seven of his extra-point kicks, while younger brother Stephen got the final point-after.
The Rocket defense held the Colonels to just 72 yards total offense.
Gardendale (2-0, 1-0 region) plays its only scheduled Thursday-night game next week as they host Mountain Brook.
