It’s Friday, and not a moment too soon…

Weather: Code Orange maintained. The Department of Environmental Management continues a Code Orange air quality alert for Jefferson and Shelby counties. Those with asthma and others sensitive to ground-level ozone and associated pollutants should limit outdoor activities. Today will again be sunny with a high around 90s, with tonight’s low in the middle 60s. The forecast stays the same through the weekend, with a slight chance of scattered showers returning Sunday night.

S.W.A.T.S gets swatted. Agents with the Alabama Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Section, along with Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies, swooped in on a controversial gym and sports-supplement company in Gardendale on Thursday afternoon. S.W.A.T.S. Performance Chip LLC, which gained nationwide notoriety for their controversial spray made from deer antler velvet, was shut down and taken over after investigators obtained a temporary restraining order against the company plus owners Mitch Ross and Chris Key. The order puts a receiver in charge, and orders all assets seized. The attorney general’s office has filed more than 260 charges against the company involving its IGF-1 spray, which Ross and Key say was used by football players at Alabama and Auburn as well as the NFL, and also regarding a “concussion cap” that is intended to help players who suffered a concussion heal faster. A hearing is set for Sept. 19 in Circuit Judge Caryl Privett’s court, where the injunction may be made permanent.

Pinson ponders a park. The Pinson City Council looked over revised plans Thursday night for their new park, to be built on approximately 14 acres just off Oak Street west of Center Point Road. The park will feature an amphitheater, playground, disk golf course and possibly a splash pad. The base cost for the park will come in at a bit over $1.266 million; with all the extras added, it will be a little more than $1.4 million. Construction could start in February and take about 12 months. Meanwhile, the council will resume their meeting today at 4, after an executive session to consider a real estate transaction and possible litigation, which took place at the end of last night’s session.

Sports: Must be the pizza. Peyton Manning tied an NFL record by throwing seven touchdown passes, as the Denver Broncos officially kicked off the regular season with a 49- 27 victory over Baltimore. Manning is the sixth quarterback to tie this record; the last was Joe Kapp of Minnesota in 1969, against the then-Baltimore Colts… Baseball: The Birmingham Barons took the first game of the Southern League championship series with a 3-1 over Tennessee at Regions Field. Pitcher Chris Bassitt struck out nine Smokies batters in seven innings. Game 2 is tonight at 7:05 at Regions… High school football: Tonight’s NJN Big Game is Mortimer Jordan at Pinson Valley, as Blue Devils QB Devlin Hodges faces off against the Indians’ Brooks Garrett. Elsewhere, both teams’ playoff chances just got better, after the AHSAA banned Walker from post-season play in the wake of the post-game brawl Friday between Walker and Cullman coaches. The Bearcats were also put on probation, but will still be eligible for the playoffs; the Vikings were bounced because they were already on probation for another incident last year.
