Addison scratched Ider off its early-season revenge tour Friday night, opening the season with a crisp and impressive 20-8 victory at A.G. Hicks Stadium.

Addison’s defense was downright dominant, limiting Ider to 64 total yards, three Bulldog running backs each finished with more than 75 yards rushing and the team avenged last year’s season-opening loss to Class 2A Ider.

“We came to play for Addison and came to play for the kids who couldn’t make it through because of some injuries. I’m just tickled to death with our effort,” Addison coach David Smothers said. “We were motivated to beat Ider after last year’s loss and motivated after looking so sloppy last week against Lynn (in the jamboree). That was hard to swallow, so I’m thrilled we played this hard.”

Addison (1-0) controlled the line of scrimmage the entire way, using a host of characters to rack up 300 yards on the ground.

The Bulldogs were also 4-of-6 on fourth-down conversions.

Junior Dillon Jarrett led the way on the ground with 85 yards rushing, Cameron Cooke finished with 82 yards and Taylor Wilson added 78 yards and a touchdown.

The Bulldogs’ defense yielded only 21 yards in the first half.

“We had kids on defense gimping around by the end of the game. Most of them sucked it up and even those who came in as replacements didn’t miss a beat,” Smothers said. “I can’t stress the incredible effort we had on both sides of the ball.”

Addison cashed in offensively on its first and final possessions in the first half.

The Bulldogs’ backfield trio shared 12 carries for 68 yards on the first scoring march. Wilson capped the drive with a 26-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead with 5:49 remaining in the first quarter.

Addison put together another 12-play drive on its next possession, but Wilson’s second field goal attempt was blocked.

The Bulldogs scored their first touchdown of the season in dramatic fashion, seconds before the first half ended. Facing a fourth-and-13 with 11.4 seconds left in the first half, Addison quarterback Zachary Anders, facing heavy pressure, hit Hunter Ray for a 39-yard touchdown strike down the left sideline. Wilson added the extra point and extended the lead to 10-0 heading into intermission. The touchdown strike was Anders’ only completion of the game in four attempts.

“That play was absolutely huge. We kept telling our receivers that someone needed to step up and Hunter found his time to shine,” Smothers said.

Added Cooke: “That touchdown gave us all the momentum and all the motivation we needed for the rest of the game. It led us to a great win.”

Wilson scored a 20-yard touchdown halfway through the third quarter to hand Addison a 17-0 lead and added his second field goal of the game, a 22-yarder, with 5:46 remaining in the game.

Ider (0-1) scored its lone touchdown with 3:59 left in the game on a 5-yard touchdown pass from Caleb Higdon to Matthew Collins.

For Addison’s defense, Kolton Denson recovered a fumble, Austin Reed collected an interception and Franky Melson had three tackles for loss.

Addison opens Class 1A, Region 5 play at Ragland next Friday, seeking to avenge its only other regular-season loss from last season.
