Brooks Garrett’s 54-yard scoring pass to Desmond Williams turned out to be the game-winner, as Pinson Valley scored a 25-18 road upset over Oneonta, the second-ranked team in Class 4A.
The winning touchdown came with nine minutes left in the game, capping a back-and-forth night for the two sides.
The Redskins got on the scoreboard early with an 8-yard touchdown run by Ko Powell.
Pinson Valley scored on a fumble recovery in the end zone by Elijah Bibbs, but the tying extra point kick was blocked. The Indians then took the lead when Garrett found Nick Gibson on an 8-yard TD pass in the second period.
Oneonta went back on top before halftime with a safety (Gibson taken down in his own end zone), a Tyler Short field goal and an 8-yard touchdown run by Javon Russell.
Gibson tied the game at 18-18 after halftime with a 20-yard scoring dash, before Garrett’s winning throw sealed the victory.
The Redskins committed four turnovers, wiping out an 80-yard advatntage in total offense.
Pinson Valley hosts the NJN Big Game next week, as Mortimer Jordan comes in to open Region 6 play.
