For now, police appear to have lost the trail of the suspect in a shooting Saturday.

Police said that the victim was a white male, 36, whose identity has not yet been released. He was taken by ambulance to UAB Hospital, where he was in an intensive care unit in unknown condition.

The suspect is described as a black male in his mid-20s, who was not wearing a shirt. Eyewitnesses near the intersection of Spring Street and Second Avenue told The North Jefferson News that they saw the suspect walking casually by their house; he started running up Second Avenue toward Main Street after someone in a pickup truck spotted him, they added.

Another eyewitness told The North Jefferson News that the driver of the pickup truck was chasing the suspect, and had some connection to the victim.

All of the eyewitnesses asked not to be identified by name.

Police blocked off a large portion of the Glendale neighborhood while K-9 units, including two from Birmingham, conducted a search. The search dogs were hindered by high heat and humidity, as well as overgrown areas in vacant lots, many of which had homes before they were destroyed by the tornado.

The search perimeter was taken down just before 4 p.m.

Police also searched the nearby Fulton Hills Apartments on Decatur Highway, after reports that the suspect had been spotted there as well.
