A former county leader who was sent to prison for corruption  killed two people and injured another before driving to a cemetery and killing himself, according to state police.

Raymond C. Smith, 51, shot and killed Michael Smith, 50, and his son Mychael Dustin Smith, 21, according to Kentucky State Police. A third victim, Michael Smith’s daughter, Robin Smith, 21, is being treated for gunshot wounds at a hospital in Tennessee.

The three were shot inside a home near Pineville, in Bell County, Ky., according to state police, who were called there at 9:42 a.m. Tuesday. Troopers found the two men dead inside the home. A helicopter took Robin Smith to the hospital.

Police have not described the relationship between the gunman and his victims.

Police say Raymond Smith then drove to Hammon Cemetery in Flat Lick, an unincorporated community in neighboring Knox County, where he shot himself. Raymond Smith had served as Knox County’s judge/executive, its top elected official, from 2002 to 2006.

In 2008, he pleaded guilty to charges that he schemed to award public works contracts to straw bidders created on behalf of businesses controlled by his family. He confessed to creating false records to show payments to those bidders had been approved.

Raymond Smith was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in federal prison for mail fraud and ordered to pay $110,000 in restitution. At the time he said he’d only acted for the benefit of the people of Knox County.
