Good Tuesday to you…
Weather: Ditto. Remember how Monday’s weather was? It will be the same today, except with a 40 percent chance of scattered storms in the afternoon with a high near 90. More of the same tomorrow.
Travel alert expanded. The State Department has expanded its warning to U.S. travelers to include the entire world, not just the Middle East and North Africa. The alert, as well as the decision to close 19 diplomatic posts in that region for the entire week, stems from specific threats by Al Qaeda taken from intercepted communications, according to both CBS and Fox News. Further reports indicate terrorists may already be in place on the Arabian Peninsula, ready to go with a large-scale operation.
Wanna buy a newspaper? No, The North Jefferson News is not for sale — not that we know of, anyway — but two major papers are changing hands. On Monday members of the Graham family, which has owned The Washington Post for eight decades, announced they are selling the paper to Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos for $250 million. Late last week, The New York Times Company announced it was selling the Boston Globe to the Boston Red Sox owner John W. Henry for $70 — a 93 percent drop from the $1 billion the Times paid for the Globe 20 years ago.
Sports: Bud Selig drops the hammer. The Major League Baseball commissioner announced suspensions against 13 players on Monday, from out-of-work free agents to the highest-paid player in the game. The biggest news was about Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who was suspended for 211 games — the rest of this season and all of 2014. A-Rod is still playing, though, while he appeals the decision, and he had a base hit in a loss to the White Sox in his first game of the year, after battling an injury. The Rodriguez suspension is the longest ever that isn’t a lifetime ban. The other 12 players, who had negotiated plea bargains with MLB, were each given 50-game suspensions. All of these were because of the use of banned performance-enhancing drugs, and all linked to the controversial Biogenesis lab in Florida… Elsewhere in baseball, the Braves continue to run away with the National League East lead, as Jason Upton’s eighth-inning homer gave Atlanta a 3-2 win over Washington. It’s the 11th straight victory for the Braves… College football: Alabama just landed another prize commitment, as ESPN reports the Tide has won over Ricky Town of Ventura, Calif. one of the top-rated junior quarterbacks in the country.
