Heavy rains cause flooding. Thunderstorms unleashed a torrent of rain on metro Birmingham on Sunday afternoon and evening, causing road flooding in scattered areas. Flood-prone Village Creek in Ensley came up just short of flood stage. The official rainfall measurement at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport was 3.17 inches.

A royal heir is on the way. Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, was admitted to St. Mary’s Hospital late Sunday night in the early stages of labor. The wife of Prince William will give borth to the third in line to the British throne. When it happens, the borth will be announced in the traditional way: a written announcement posuted at the gates of Buckingham Palace. Twitter will take it from there.

We’re No. 1 again — for the moment. The bankruptcy proceedings file by the city of Detroit last week, which would eclipse the previous record set by Jefferson County, have been stayed by a state judge on behalf of retired city workers whose pensions represent about half of the $19 billion in debts. The city’s manager is appealing to federal court.

Phil Mickelson is “the champion golfer of the year,” as the Brits like to say, as he scored four birdies in the last six holes to win The Open Championship at Muirfield, Scotland. Mickelson, who shot a 66 for the final round, came from five strokes behind and rallied while the third-round leaders faded. Tiger Woods could not make up a two-stroke deficit, and finished sixth… Basketball: Former Auburn player Korvotney Barber was found dead near a condominium at Panama City Beach, Fla. Barber is believed to have drowned, police say; his body was found Sunday evening after he was reported missing Saturday… Bicycle racing: Britain’s Chris Froome rode victoriously down the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday, as he won the 100th edition of the Tour De France. Froome led the race for the last 13 out of 21 stages.
