What has become a popular tradition in north Jefferson among military vehicle enthusiasts is continuing this weekend.

The annual Mt. Olive Military Vehicle Show and Swap Meet is Friday and Saturday at Gamble Truck Parts.

Sponsored by the Dixie Division Military Vehicles Club (DDMVC), the event features military Jeeps and other vehicles for display as well as vehicles and parts for sale or trade.

The show has been running continuously for about 10 years.

Ronnie Guin, president of the DDMVC, said his favorite part of the event is the participation of veterans.

“You always meet the veterans and hear the stories they’ll tell you about how they used the equipment while they were serving this country,” Guin said. “You can tell it means something to them.”

He likes to watch the veterans, especially from World War II, place their hand on a Jeep and see the nostalgia on their faces.

“They smile and you can see their fondness for the vehicle,” he said. “In some cases, a Jeep saved their lives. Or it brought some mail to them when they were depressed, or some hot food.”

Guin has restored three World War II-era Jeeps — one each from the Army, Navy and Marines.

One of his Jeeps won a gold medal at the Military Preservation Association National Convention last year. That one, as well as the two others, will be on display at the Mt. Olive show this weekend.

The show starts at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and ends when the crowd stops coming.
