If you’re a baseball fan, you know what hitting for the cycle means: a single, double, triple and home run in one game.

But have you ever heard of fielding for the cycle?

Gardendale’s Carden Jacobs has. In a game for his 5- and 6-year-old White Sox team on April 19, the shortstop recorded a unassisted put-out, an unassisted double play and — rarest of all — an unassisted triple play.

The triple-killing ended the 11-3 victory for the Sox. Jacobs caught a fly ball for the first out, forced out the runner going from second to third before he could tag up, then tagged out the runner coming from first to second.

Surprisingly, the very rare unassisted triple play by itself is not a first in Gardendale. Coleman Maldonado pulled it off last season. But it is the first time anyone locally knows of a fielding ‘cycle.’

On the double play, Jacobs tagged the runner going from second to third, and forced out the runner coming from first into second.
