It was a “throwaway” game, which is to say that despite being a Class 5A Area 12 softball game, the outcome had no effect on next week’s playoff seedings.

Mortimer Jordan coach Shawn Maze treated it exactly like that, electing not to give Curry a look at ace pitcher Bailey Murphy right before the tournament, and in the process conceding a 14-1 run-rule loss to the seventh-ranked Yellow Jackets on Saturday morning.

Maze put an assortment of pitchers into the circle, all of whom were roughed up by the visitors. Savannah Crawford started, with Natalie Johnsey taking over in the third inning and Natalie Landers in the fourth, before Crawford returned to finish in the fifth.

Sixth-ranked Jordan scored their lone run in the first, when Murphy hit into an error at first that allowed Shelby Maze  to score. Maze’s lead-off single was the only hit allowed by Curry; starter Ashlee Swindle worked three innings, with reliever Holli McGinnins pitching two perfect innings.

Shauna Rowe was 3-for-4 with a triple and three RBIs for the Jackets. Gabby Englebert was also 3-for-4 and sent home one run.

The two teams will meet again in the first round of tournament play, which will be held at Jordan; top-seed Hayden asked for the site to be moved because their field was not yet ready to host a playoff. The Wildcats will tak eon Walker in the first round.

Before then, the Blue Devils close ou tthe season with a Tuesday game against Hoover.
