A Birmingham man is charged with attempted murder and other charges following an incident at Walmart in Gardendale on Monday.

Gardendale Police arrested Charles Earl Jackson, 60, after what started out as a shoplifting attempt, according to Lt. Bryan Lynch.

Walmart loss prevention personnel stopped Jackson at about 10:30 p.m. and escorted him back into the store, where he pulled a knife on two employees and threatened them, Lynch said.

He then drove away from the store with Gardendale Police following. During the pursuit, Jackson struck a patrol car with his vehicle, which is the cause of the murder charge.

Officers lost contact with Jackson near the Blount County line, but his unoccupied vehicle was located and recovered.

Soon afterward, Blount County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Jackson at a business off of the Highway 160 exit of Interstate 65 (the Hayden/Corner exit).

Jackson is currently in the Blount County Jail on unrelated drug charges and will be transported to the Jefferson County Jail when released.

He is charged with attempted murder, two counts of robbery first degree, reckless endangerment and attempt to elude law enforcement. His total bond is $180,600.
