No. 4 (5A) Mortimer Jordan 4, Oak Grove 2
Published 10:51 pm Monday, April 15, 2013
Mortimer Jordan threw several pitchers at Oak Grove on Monday, but it was one of them who won the game with her bat more than her arm, as the fourth-ranked Blue Devils prevailed by a 4-2 score.
Bailey Murphy drove in three runs, with a single in her only official at-bat plus a walk and a sacrifice fly. Shelby Maze added a single and a stolen base, and scored twice.
Natalie Johnsey got the win for Jordan, coming in for starter Savanna Crawford after 2-1/3 innings. Johnsey went through the end of the fifth, allowing just one hit while striking out three Tigers.
Johnsey was relieved by Natalie Landers for an inning; she then gave way to Murphy in an unusual closer’s role, who got credit for the save by working the seventh inning.
Courtney Hood was 2-for-2 for Oak Grove with a triple and a run scored. Lila Ritter was the losing pitcher, allowing four hits and four earned runs while striking out five.
The Devils (17-8) host Mountain Brook on Tuesday.
