After a big win in the Bob Jones Invitational at Madison over the weekend, Corner softball coach Aaron James wasn’t liking what he was seeing early in his team’s game at Pinson Valley on Tuesday.

“We’re in zombie mode right now,” he quipped.

The Yellow Jackets soon came to life, though, as they defeated the Indians 8-3.

After being shut out in the top of the first, Corner scored at least one run in every inning afterward, while Pinson struggled to bring runners home despite numerous scoring chances.

First baseman Madison McCormack took a 3-1 pitch over the left field fence for a lead-off home run in the third inning. She had earlier scored the Jackets’ first run when Cheyenne Bryant hit a popup that was misplayed by the Indians infield, and she also forced home a run when she drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh.

Corner posted two more runs in the fourth on a bases-loaded hit batsman, followed by a sacrifice fly by Morgan Daniel.

Taylor Sloan was 3-for-5 plus a walk, as was McCormack, who drove in four runs for the day.

Pitcher Jenna Trimm drove in the Indians’ first run with a single in the fifth; she was 3-for-4 at the plate. Makayla Ewers had a two-run double in the seventh and was 2-for-3 overall.

Corner was playing without several starters, including pitcher/infielder Jordan Entrekin, because of a conflict with an academic event.

Pitcher Sydney Watson went the distance, striking out four batters but walking five and scattering nine hits.

Starter Tristen Griffith took the loss for Pinson; she laste two innings and allowed two runs. Trimm came to the circle to start the third inning and worked four, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs.

Corner is schedule to travel to area foe Oak Grove on Thursday, weather permitting, while Pinson is to play a doubleheader at Moody in a Class 5A Area 11 clash. Both contests are threatened by the forecast for severe weather.
