Softball roundup: Corner, Hayden fare well in tournaments

Corner won all four of its games last week, including a victory over the No. 1 team in Class 3A in the Wise Memorial Tournament at Springville.

The Yellow Jackets beat top-ranked Pisgah 3-2, thanks to a Taylor Sloan single; when she tried to stretch it out, Pisgah overthrew and Lille Blackmon scored to win the game.

Corner took down Moody, the fifth-ranked team in 5A, by a 2-0 score. Blackmon scored on a suicide squeeze play from a Madison McCormack bunt, and Bailee Hammock hit a solo homer.

The Jackets also beat Springville 10-4, and took down Etowah 7-1.

Hayden successful on the coast: The Wildcats won seven out of nine games in the Gulf Shores Tournament III over spring break last week.

Their only losses were to eventual champion Sparkman and to Fairhope, both by 2-0 scores. They posted victories over No. 5 (4A) Sardis, No. 8 (2A) Lexington, and twice over Athens by 1-0 scores.
