Pinson Valley put up five runs in each of the final two innings, as they blew past Mountain Brook 11-5 in Tuesday baseball.
The Indians, ranked ninth in the ASWA Class 5A poll, reeled off six straight singles to start the sixth inning, brought home another run on a bases-loaded walk, then had two more RBI singles – including Jared McCurdy’s second hit of the inning.
Zac Ray and Baker Hodge each bashed two-run singles in the seventh inning. McCurdy tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly.
Hodge opened the scoring for Pinson in the third when he came home on a wild pitch.
Indians starter Colby Wingard recorded all but the very last out, with seven strikeouts and seven hits. When he started to falter late, coach Shane Chappel brought in reliever Wyatt Burns to get the final Spartan out.
Mountain Brook starter Forrest Debuys pitched five solid innings before the wheels fell off in the sixth. He had seven strikeouts and just one base hit before he was pulled four batters into the sixth.
McCurdy was 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the day. Josh Hines was 2-for-4, drove home one run and scored two.
Sam Centeno was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Spartans (7-3).
Pinson (11-5) plays Wednesday night in the rain-delayed Jefferson County Schools Baseball Tournament championship game against Gardendale. The game begins at 6 p.m. at Birmingham-Southern College.
