Weather: Rainy. The rain that moved into the area overnight continues through the day, moving out in the mid-afternoon hours. Temperatures will fall throughout the day, down to the middle 50s by evening rush hour and into the middle 30s once the rain leaves tonight. Tuesday will be sunny with highs in the middle 50s and lows near freezing, and the same holds for Wednesday.

Welcome to the new job, Mr. Secretary. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel hasn’t had a warm welcome in his current tour of Afghanistan. The new secretary had to cancel a meeting with President Hamed Karzai because of suicide bombs in the vicinity, according to Bloomberg News. Later, Karzai accused the United States of collusion with the radical-Islamist Taliban forces. Hagel took office on March 1 after a contentious confirmation process in the Senate; Hagel was himself a former senator.

Sports: Final battle. If the rain holds odd long enough, Gardendale and Pinson Valley — the latter ranked ninth in the ASWA Class 5A state baseball rankings — will compete for the Jefferson County Schools championship at 6 p.m. The game will be played at Birmingham-Southern College… NASCAR: Matt Kenseth gambled on Las Vegas, not taking on new tires in his final pit stop. The gamble worked, giving him the lead and a close win over Kasey Kahne on Sunday. It’s the third time Kenseth has won at Las Vegas… Golf: Tiger Woods is back on top of the PGA Tour, thanks to yet another win at “The Blue Monster” at Doral. He won by two shots Sunday over Steve Stricker, who had actually given Woods some putting yips during this week’s practice… Curling (yes, it’s a slow news day): Brad Jacobs and his northern Ontario team won the finals of the Tim Hortons Brier, the Canadian men’s curling championship. Jacobs defeated Jeff Stoughton of Manitoba 11-4.
