The former pastor of Gardendale-Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church was released Monday and immediately taken into custody by law enforcement, according to Gardendale Police Chief Mike Walker. Greer is charged with one count of murder and another count of attempted murder, and is held without bond.

Greer is accused of shooting and killing his wife Lisa, and also shooting and wounding his daughter Suzanna in an incident at the church parsonage on January 10. According to police, Terry Greer then tried to kill himself with a knife, after Suzanna wrestled the gun away from him. Terry Greer was hospitalized for treatment of multiple stab wounds, and later for pneumonia as a result of the wounds.

Terry Greer had been the pastor at Gardendale-Mt. Vernon since last summer, when he and former pastor Dr. Rudy Guess swapped churches during the annual North Alabama Conference. Greer had been at First United Methodist of Decatur. The conference has replaced Terry Greer with an interim pastor.

Terry Greer’s attorney, Henry Lagman, was out of town and could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.
