Mortimer Jordan appears to be primed and ready to defend its Class 5A Area 11 championship.

Jordan was a less-than-comforting host to Hayden, which they pummeled 60-21 on Friday night.

The convincing victory gave the Blue Devils their sixth straight win, and a cozy perch atop the area standings with a 3-0 record.

“It’s good to be where we are, but we are not near where we need to be,” said Jordan coach Lynn Elkins. “We have to continue playing better and better.”

The host Blue Devils controlled this one from the beginning. The game was all but over by the half as they took a 26-8 lead into the locker room, thank to a blistering start by the Jordan shooters. Midway through the second quarter, the Blue Devils had made seven of their 12 attempts from the floor (58 percent).

Jordan ended the game shooting just under 40 percent from the field, despite playing backups for much of the second half.

“We got to play a lot of kids tonight that don’t ordinarily get to play,” said Elkins.

Seniors Orion Recke and Connor Moon gave Jordan respectable outputs despite seeing limited action. Recke recorded eight points, four steals and six rebounds, while Moon dropped 10 points on the Wildcats with four rebounds.

Sophomore Dalton Hudson fueled the Devils (8-1, 3-0 area) second-half offense with 10 points and five rebounds.

“We didn’t play our best game,” said Elkins. “We missed a lot of layups and free throws. We can play better but we’ll take a win.”

Chris Whitt scored 11 points and Duncan Parker had 10 rebounds for the Cats (2-8, 0-3 area).

Jordan heads to Curry on Tuesday, while Hayden goes to Locust Fork on Monday.
