It was a breakout night for senior Justice Spidell, who missed the first five games of the season on a suspension and hasn’t been heard from since, as he scored a career-high 21 points in Gardendale’s 76-71 boys basketball win over Hueytown on Friday.
Spidell scored 12 of his points in the fourth quarter, and was a perfect 6-for-6 from the foul line to help the Rockets maintain their third-quarter lead down the stretch. He was 6-of-7 inside the 3-point arc and 7-for-10 overall.
Guard Juan Jackson had an even bigger night, leading all scorers with 26 points, including a 3-pointer in each of the four quarters.
The Golden Gophers took the early lead, but Gardendale (5-6) closed the gap to a single point at halftime, and took the lead for good in the third period.
D.J. Lewis had 11 points, and Allen Williams had six assists and five steals before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
Four Gophers scored in double figures, led by David Evans and his 15 points, Redaerius Lacey scored 12 points, and Robert Johnson and Jerry Harris added 10 each for Hueytown (2-8).
Gardendale travels to Pleasant Grove Tuesday night.
