More than 80 people face drug charges in the aftermath of a massive county-wide roundup that ended earlier this month, following a five month-long investigation by local and state law enforcement agencies.

Led by the Cullman Narcotics Enforcement Team (CNET), the sweep resulted in 81 arrests — including three on felony drug trafficking, three for felony manufacturing, 38 for felony distribution and dozens more on possession charges for marijuana, controlled substances and drug paraphernalia. Most of the arrests were made in a single day.

The roundup involved the cooperation of investigators from the Cullman County Sheriff’s Office, Cullman Police Department, Hanceville Police Department, U.S. Marshals and the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, and the Alabama Beverage Control Board.

Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said Monday the sweep wouldn’t have been possible without each agency’s contribution, but noted that citizens fed up with drugs in their community can take credit for many of the arrests.

“We really appreciate the help we received from all of our law enforcement, and I think that all three of our local agencies — Cullman, Hanceville and the sheriff’s office — work together really well. I can’t say enough good things about them.

“But, we especially appreciate all the citizens out there who also have helped us by giving us the information that has led to a lot of these arrests. The thing about working in law enforcement is that we live here, too, and we want our communities safe just as any citizen does. And we’ve got a lot of citizens who have played a big part in helping all of us make a dent in our drug problem.”
