It’s Wednesday, and it’s a new day — so says Gus Malzahn…

Weather: A bit more rain. We’ll continue to see scattered showers through the day, with highs in the upper 60s. Rain will taper off tonight with lows in the lower 50s. Rain chances are 50 percent today and 20 percent tonight. Skies will clear on Thursday.

McGregor tries again. VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor will try once again to operate electronic bingo machines at his now-shuttered dog track in Macon County by March. McGregor once had 5,000 machines, similar to Vegas-style slot machines, at the track. But he shut down the operation two years ago after threats from the stats. Attorney General  Luther Strange maintains that the machines are still illegal, but McGregor’s attorney claims the new machines will be legal.

Sports: Tigers hop on the Gus Bus. Former Auburn offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn was announced Tuesday night as the school new head football coach. Malzahn, who left the Tigers a year ago to take the head coaching job at Arkansas Stats, will replace his old boss, Gene Chizik. “It’s a new day, and my goal is to get Auburn back to a championship level,” Malzahn said in a press conference. “Two years ago we won a championship, and the expectations of Auburn are to win championships, so that’s my goal, and we are going to do everything in our power to get that done.” No word yet on whether Malzahn will coach the Red Wolves in their bowl game in a few weeks… Pro football: Bob Costas is having second thoughts about his controversial remarks on the Jovan Belcher tragedy during Sunday Night Football. On Dan Patrick’s radio show, Costas said, “There are a number of issues related to this that we could begin to talk about and think about. The problem was that I didn’t have enough time to get to many of them. And that, I think, was my mistake, to be quite honest, Dan.” Costas will appear on Fox News’ “O’Reilly Factor” tonight… Prep basketball: Hayden’s girls team kept its unbeaten season alive, but just barely as they edged out Good Hope 53-52. Grayson Taylor scored 17 points and Katie Parr had 19 rebounds. Meanwhile, the Gardendale girls defeated Pleasant Grove 59-50 behind a 30 point, 19 rebound effort from Chelsey Deloney. On the boys side, Hayden won its second straight, with a 40-36 victory over Good Hope, while Pleasant Grove took down Gardendale.
