It’s Friday and we still have football…

Weather: Frosty morn. There’s likely some frost on your windshield this morning, but the day will warm up as the sun comes out, with highs around 60. Lows tonight will go down to the upper 30s. The weekend will also be sunny and a shade warmer, with highs in the middle 60s and lows in the lower 40s.

BP settles. The British oil giant has agreed to plead guilty to 14 criminal charges and pay a fine of $4.5 billion for the 2010 Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Two supervisors on the Deepwater Horizon oil rig will also be charged with 23 counts of manslaughter, and a BP executive will also be charged with lying to Congress. The fine does not affect other penalties and judgments in upcoming civil cases.

Tragedy in veterans’ parade. A freight train hit a parade float filled with veterans headed for a banquet in their honor, killing four on board and injuring 17 more. The wreck in Midland happened as the vets were being taken to a “Hunt for Heroes” event at a nearby arena the kickoff event for an all-expense-paid deer hunt for the veterans this weekend. Police said warning flashers and gates were working at the Union Pacific Railroad crossing.

One last plate of stuffed shells. Lovoy’s Restaurant, a beloved institution in Homewood for six decades, will close its doors today. The Italian restaurant moved from Green Springs Highway to the SoHo development in downtown Homewood two years ago, but co-owner Zac Lovoy decided on Monday that this would be the last week. The restaurant was best known for its stuffed pasta shells and baked oysters.

Sports: Fultondale faces Fyffe. It’s the second round of the AHSAA football playoffs, and the Wildcats come home after a win over seventh-ranked Lanett last week. This week the opponent is unbeaten Fyffe, who is ranked second. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.… Basketball: New Gardendale girls’ coach Amy Barnett won her debut game in Thursday night’s season opener, as Chelsey Deloney scored 22 points to lead the Rockets past Oak Mountain 49-40. Meanwhile, the boys’ team lost its grip on a lead of as many as 11 points, and missed a possible game-winning shot at the buzzer as the Eagles won 47-46. Juan Jackson came off the bench to score 22 points, and was 5-for-8 from behind the 3-point line.
