A rainy day is not likely to stop troops on a mission, and a little rain did not halt a celebration of those very troops this week.

The annual Veterans Day celebration held in Fultondale was moved from the North Jefferson Veterans Memorial Wall — an outdoor park — to inside Fultondale City Hall on Monday.

The city hall was closed that day in observance of Veterans Day, but Mayor Jim Lowery, himself a veteran, opened the facility to a standing-room-only crowd as veterans and others conducted the ceremony.

David Daniel opened the ceremony and later participated in a flag-folding ceremony along with Michael Dumas. Daniel is a member of North Jefferson VFW Post 10250, which consolidated last month with Brookside VFW Post 6173 (see story below). Dumas is a member of Post 6173.

Also at the ceremony, the Rev. Dan Nichols gave the invocation and Mary Lou Tolbert sang the National Anthem.

Also, Armstrong read aloud the names of 10 veterans that were recently inscribed onto the Memorial Wall in Fultondale. They are:

• David E. Fuller, U.S. Coast Guard, World War II
• Roland A. Glasgo, U.S. Army, World War II
• Robert W. Leonard, U.S. Air Force, Korea
• Melvin T. Neville, U.S. Marines, World War II
• Hubert E. Oswalt, U.S. Navy, World War II
• William A. Reid, U.S. Army, Vietnam
• Malcom D. Wilson, U.S. Army, Korea
• Andrew Woods Sr., U.S. Army, World War II

The Fultondale High School band also played during the ceremony.

To close out the event, the VFW Honor Guard fired a 21-gun salute and played Taps.
