Good Tuesday morning…

Weather: Ugh. It’s still on the cold side here. Temperatures will struggle to reach 60 again despite sunny skies, with lows tonight dipping to the middle 30s; wind will keep frost from developing, though. It will slowly warm up through the rest of the week, but will still be on the cool side for this time of year.

Superstorm Sandy. What was originally categorized as a hurricane hit the east coast Monday, with the center of the storm coming ashore near Atlantic City, N.J. The worst of the winds, which still were above hurricane levels in many places, occurred between Cape Cod and the Delmarva Peninsula. New York City was hard hit, with many streets in Lower Manhattan deluged with high water. Winds blew the façade off of one building in the Chelsea neighborhood, sea water filled the Ground Zero construction site, and a crane atop an under-construction skyscraper partially collapsed. Much of NYC was without power; subways, road and rail tunnels were also flooded. Many Jersey Shore cities were inundated, and casinos in Atlantic City were flooded. As of midnight, the eye of the storm was located in the Philadelphia suburbs, and it is starting to meet up with a winter storm coming in from the west; this will cause snowfalls measured in feet in the Appalachian Mountains.

The storm still is affecting the rest of the country:

• All U.S. stock markets remain closed today. Flooding has been reported in the basement of the Ney York Stock Exchange building.
• Virtually all commercial travel in the Northeast Corridor is shut down, including the LaGuardia, JFK and Newark airports. This is having a ripple effect throughout the rest of the air travel system, especially at hubs such as Atlanta. Amtrak remains shut down in the northeast.

The storm will continue to affect the region for at least 48 hours more as it slowly curves northward, pushed by the winter storm.

Sports: 49ers roll. Quarterback Alex Smith threw only one incomplete pass in 19 attempts, and had three touchdown passes as San Francisco whipped Arizona 24-3 on Monday Night Football. Michael Crabtree was on the receiving end of two of the scoring throws.
