Two people killed in a plane crash in Cullman County have been identified as a Tennessee dentist and his wife, according to a Nashville news station.

WSMV-TV identified the couple as Dr. Gary Cohen and his wife, Nancy, of Hendersonville, Tenn.

Cullman County Coroner Steve Rodgers said Tuesday afternoon that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) had not made an official release of the names of the plane’s occupants.

The plane, identified as a Mooney M20 single-propeller aircraft, was en route from Destin, Fla., back to Sumner County Regional Airport in Gallatin, Tenn., when it went down in a pasture on the north side of County Road 174 in Cullman County, less than a mile from Smith Lake.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the FAA are still investigating at the scene of the crash. Cullman County Sheriff Mike Rainey said he has personnel remaining at the scene to assist.

The bodies were sent from the scene to a forensic laboratory in Huntsville for autopsies, Rodgers said.

Authorities closed off several roads in the area last night and this morning while recovery efforts continued.

“From what we understand, the cleanup efforts will be finished by nightfall,” Rainey said.
