The Gardendale City Council last week approved the spending of an additional $367,674 on the Public Safety Center that is under renovations.

The facility, formerly a Food World grocery store, is being revamped to hold the city’s jail, court, magistrate offices and police department offices.

Actual costs for the work are more than $472,000, but there was an original credit of just over $104,000 in the base bid for roof repairs.

Repairs will include removal and replacement of roof decking, demolition of ceiling grid and tiles, demolition of lights and installation of temporary lighting, and demolition of existing ductwork.

In other business, the council:

• authorized a moratorium on used car businesses. Mayor Othell Phillips said it is so the city’s planning and zoning board can work through the city’s master plan guidelines.

• agreed to solicit sealed bids and pre-qualify contractors for construction of a sewer main at the City Center on Mt. Olive Road. The main would serve Buffalo Wild Wings and other businesses at the site.

• authorized the mayor to enter into an an agreement with Building & Earth Sciences Inc. for geotechnical consultation services at the City Center. The services are related to construction of sewer facilities.

• hired Willie Stroud as a part-time control desk clerk at the Gardendale Civic Center.

• voted to cut the grass and assess the charges back to the owners at five properties that were in violation of the city’s weed control ordinance.

The next council meeting is July 16, 6 p.m. at Gardendale City Hall.

There is a public hearing at city hall today, 6:30 p.m., regarding the closing of Phillips Drive for the new Dollar General store.
