Treadmill Walk-a-Thon to benefit Warrior library

Some say that a good community has a good library. But sometimes a community begins expanding so much that its library has to expand along with it, something that is happening in Warrior.
Chris Sloan of Global Fittness and Tanning inc. will be hosting the upcoming Treadmill Walk-a-Thon to help the Evelyn Thornton Public Library in Warrior move into a larger building. The staff of the library has been planning to move into the former National Guard armory building on Cane Creek Road. So far it has been a long process, which Sloan hopes to help out.
“It’s a small building,” said Cassie Johnson, the Warrior library’s head librarian, of the building that she currently works in, which has been there for over 30 years. “The community of Warrior has been growing so much over the past several years that we just need more space.”
Johnson said that moving the library will allow them to offer a larger selection of books as well as more computers for patrons to use.
Sloan is a certified personal trainer who has been in the fitness field for over 15 years and founded Bama Fitness LLC and Global Fitness and Tanning, inc. in Warrior. He cited his children as inspiration for helping out the library, stressing that libraries are important for educating kids. He encouraged people to come out and donate.
“I just think it’s a great thing for kids to come off video games and computer and back into libraries with some real books and get them reading,” he said. “If you want to help your library, come out and donate.”
The charity event may prove a little difficult as Sloan plans to run on a treadmill for at least six hours non-stop. Going 3.3 miles an hour, he estimates that he will burn 2,000-2,500 calories. He hopes to raise at least $2,000 for the library’s move.
Global Fitness has a cardio section where the Treadmill Walk-a-Thon will be held. People are invited to join Sloan in the workout by signing up to use the other treadmills for 20 minutes at a time, with a $10 donation. Those who don’t want to join the workout may come in and make any amount of donation.
The Treadmill Walk-a-Thon will take place on July 11, beginning at 6 a.m until noon. People wishing to donate online may go to www.warrior.lib.al.us.
