McCleney, Murphy, Parr and Entrekin named to All-State Softball first team

Four local high school softball players have been named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association’s All-State first teams.
Topping the list is Haylie McCleney, the Mortimer Jordan senior center fielder who was just named the Gatorade Player of the Year for Alabama. McCleney was chosen as the Class 5A Player of the Year and Hitter of the Year. McCleney broke the AHSAA single-season batting average record with a .692 mark this season.
McCleney is also in the running for the ASWA Miss Softball award, given to the state’s best player regardless of classification. That award will be presented in a banquet on Sunday night.
McCleney’s teammate, eighth-grade pitcher Bailey Murphy, was also named to the Class 5A first team. Murphy only played less than half of the varsity season, after pitching for North Jefferson Middle School’s full season. After two losses in her first varsity starts, Murphy went on a 12-game winning streak that finally ended at the state tournament.
Murphy is one of just two eighth-graders to be named to the first team, along with Brittney Minor of Leroy in Class 2A.
Blue Devils third baseman Shelby Maze was awarded an honorable mention. All three Jordan players were named to the all-tournament team at the state finals, where they advanced all the way to the championship game for the sixth consecutive year.
Hayden sophomore Katie Parr was also named to the Class 5A first team. Parr, who began her career at Tabernacle Christian before transferring to Hayden for her freshman year, was chosen for the team as a designated hitter, though she was also a pitcher and third baseman. Parr was a key part of the first Wildcat team to advance to the regional tournament since the playoff structure was changed in 2007.
In Class 4A, Corner’s Jordan Entrekin was selected to the first team as a second baseman. Entrekin was also a regular pitcher for the Yellow Jackets, who advanced to the North Central Regional.
