Kimberly residents could see lower garbage fees, if a bid is accepted by the city council.

The council received sealed bids from several companies during their regular meeting last Tuesday night, after they had put the contract back up for bids because of a rate increase sought by the current provider. WastePro turned in the low bid of $10.95 per month, which is more than $11 less than the current quarterly rate of $44.

Council President Pro Tem Bob Ellerbrock, presiding in the absence of Mayor Craig Harris, appointed a committee to look over WastePro’s bid package to make sure it met the council’s specifications.

In other business, the council:

• Announced the awarding of the state’s stop on the 2012 Warrior Dash tour to The Hitchin’ Post, an event expected to bring upwards of 20,000 visitors to the city in October (as reported in this story);

• Adopted the updated Jefferson County Multi-Hazard Mitigation Plan, after tabling action for a month;

• Gave first reading to a motion to vacate portions of Jefferson Street and Jamie Street, after being petitioned by neighboring residents;

• Gave first reading to a resolution to annex property at 9008 Warrior Kimberly Road, owned by Jeff and Patty Nail;

• Approved participation in the Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday;

• Added Councilman Brian Pharris to the those approved to use the city’s account at Sam’s Club, replacing Harris;

• Moved the next regular council meeting to May 28, to avoid a conflict with Memorial Day.
