The first indictment in the Kimberly federal gambling and bribery investigation has been handed down by a grand jury.

Robert R. Taylor, Jr. on Kimberly is charged with one count each of conspiracy, federal programs bribery and operation of an illegakl gambling business. Under the bribery count, Taylor would be subject to forfeiture of proceeds from the illegal gambling.

The charges were returned by a federal grand jury on Wednesday.

Taylor is accused of operating illegal gambling machines at the AMVETS post property in Kimberly, and conspiring with others to run the operation, and also helping to get slot machines for other locations in houses on Crane Street, Bill Jones Road and U.S. 31.

He is also charged with bribing Mayor Craig Harris, in return for the mayor keeping city police from interfering with the operation. Harris was cooperating with the FBI at the time, and secretly recorded the bribes being offered and paid.

According to the indictment, Taylor’s co-conspirators paid Harris about $4,000 in bribes from November 2010 to April 2011.

The Taylor indictment is the first of several expected in the investigation, with at least six other co-conspirators involved. Already, Daniel “Boone” Stone has pleaded guilty to conspiracy and illegal gambling, but he is cooperating with the government in the investigation.
