Weather: Occasional boom-booms. We put up with off-and-on thunderstorms last night, and some will come around again today, with a 50 percent chance of precipitation and a high around 84. We’ll have more of the same tonight and Tuesday, with nighttime lows in the mid-60s. Clouds move out and temperatures cool off a bit on Wednesday.

Traffic: ALDOT has scheduled yet another rolling roadblock on I-65 through the Corridor X construction zone this afternoon, but that is subject to rain staying away. It’s for the northbound lane only, and will begin at the I-20/59 interchange downtown around 1:30 p.m. U.S. 31 will also be closed in the same area about that time.

County Commission seeks help in Montgomery. The Jefferson County Commission won’t meet Tuesday, but will instead travel to the State Capitol to garner support for the Financially Distressed Counties Act. That bill would let counties in bankruptcy assess occupational taxes of a half percent — the same amount as the tax once in place here, but wiped out by the courts — and an additional one-percent sales tax. The bill is currently in a House committee.

Lawmaker suggests casino pact with Creeks. The Montgomery Advertiser reports that a state representative from Mobile wants the state to consider an official compact with the Poarch Band of Creek Indians that would formally allow casino gambling on tribal lands, in exchange for taxes to be collected on gaming receipts. Rep. Jim Barton (R) says that revenues from letting the Creeks operate up to six casinos would pay for shortfalls in several state agencies. Other GOP lawmakers and the governor’s office weren’t biting, though. Attorney General Luther Strange recently announced that he would ask a federal regulatory agency to force the Poarch Band to close its three current slot parlors, since the legality of such operations in places such as the Victoryland dog track has been overturned, at least for now.

“Goober” passes. Comedian George Lindsey, the Alabama native known universally for his portrayal of Goober Pyle on “The Andy Griffith Show,” died Sunday morning in Nashville after an extended illness. Lindsey, born in Fairfield and reared in Jasper, played the cousin of Gomer Pyle (played by fellow Alabama native Jim Nabors) on the Griffith show and its spin-off, “Mayberry R.F.D.” He also carried the Goober persona over into his comedy career, with a long stint as a regular on “Hee Haw,” and a similar character on a guest appearance on “M*A*S*H.” Lindsey had suffered a stroke earlier this year. He was 83.

Sports, and lots of it — let’s take a deep breath… High school softball: For the first time since the AHSAA adopted the current playoff format in the middle of the previous decade, all five local public schools have advance to the regional tournament level. Hayden punched its ticket for the North Central Regional by defeating Curry 5-3 in the loser’s bracket final of the Class 5A Area 11 Tournament at Mortimer Jordan on Saturday. They lost to Jordan 6-1 in the championship game which followed. The Blue Devils advanced to regionals with a win over Curry on Friday. It’s the first-ever trip to regionals for the Wildcats. Those two teams join Gardendale, Corner and Fultondale on Friday at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills. (We’ll have the full schedule on our website later Monday.)… Minor league football: The Alabama Warriors won their Xtreme South Football League semifinal playoff Saturday at Jimmie Trotter Stadium, beating the South Alabama Seminoles 16-12. Lloyd Blevins brought down the Seminole quarterback and forced a fumble, the picked up the ball and ran 66 yards for a touchdown and the game-winning score.… Auto racing: Brad Keselowski pulled off an amazing move on the final green-white-checkered lap of the Aaron’s 499, getting a push from teammate Kyle Busch to get to the lead on the restart, then dropping down and pulling away for the win…. College softball: Alabama wrapped up its third SEC regular-season championship Sunday when the third-ranked Crimson Tide defeated Florida 5-3…. Horse racing: I’ll Have Another put it in another gear in the final 200 yards, moving past second-favorite Bodemeister to win the 138th Kentucky Derby on Saturday…. Soccer: And because we know you care, Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-1 to win the F.A. Cup, England’s version of the Super Bowl on Saturday.
