Good morning, and we hope you’re hungry today…
Weather: Still wet. More rain with a bit of thunder is expected today, with highs only reaching 70. Rain continues tonight and on into Wednesday morning, with nighttime lows around 53 and highs tomorrow in the mid 70s. It will clear out Wednesday afternoon, and stay clear until Friday afternoon.
Traffic: More blasting is scheduled for Wednesday the I-65 construction zone at the new I-22 interchange. This will result in another rolling roadblock for the northbound lanes starting at about 1:30. This will also affect U.S. 31 in the same general area.
At long, long last. The new Gardendale location of Kairos Kafe will open at 10:30 this morning. Owner James Jones made it official on a Facebook post at about midnight last night. The restaurant, the first branch of the popular Birmingham eatery, was announced more than a year ago and has faced many challenges in remodeling the location on Main Street across from City Hall. The space was formerly the home of the Main Street Cafe, and before that Max’s Cafeteria.
Today is tax day. It’s a little later than usual, thanks to April 15 falling on a Sunday and a District of Columbia holiday yesterday, but your federal and state income tax returns are officially due in the mail today. If you owe money, you need to send along a check with at least an estimate of what you owe; if you don’t you may file for an automatic extension. The IRS website at www.irs.gov will be very popular today.
Sports: Hayden softball edges Corner. The Yellow Jackets broke out the big bats, but the Wildcats took advantage of fielding errors and came away with a 4-3 win Monday. Kayla Byrd barely got to home plate before her teammate was called out at second on an over-slide; that proved to be the winning run…. Eighth-grade pitcher Bailey Murphy chalked up her first varsity win by striking out 10 Cougars as Mortimer Jordan bombed Clay-Chalkville 10-0 in five innings…. Football: Shattered. The famous crystal football, hoisted above the head of the winning coach at the BCS Championship Game, is made of Waterford crystal and is quite fragile. The parent of an Alabama player found that out the hard way, as he or she — Tide officials won’t name names — knocked it of its perch atop The Coaches’ Trophy, breaking it into many, many pieces. School officials are now looking to replace the $30,000 trophy. It’s not the first time this has happened, as tight end knocked Orson Charles Florida’s 2008 version off during a recruiting visit, which may be why he ended up at Georgia instead.
