The Fultondale Arts Council is working in partnership with the Birmingham Park Players to produce “The Dixie Swim Club,” which has been shown at festivals in the Birmingham area before coming to the northern part of Jefferson County. The play will be held at Fultondale High School.

The setting of the play takes place in North Carolina with an all female cast of five characters.

“It’s about five ladies who have won a championship as a swim team and they get together every year to talk about life and catch up with each other,” said Clay Boyce, the director. “The show takes you through different generations of their meetings about five years apart until it jumps about 23 years so you see them age from their 40s all the way up to their 70s.”

“The Dixie Swim Club” was written by Jones Hope Wooten, the creative team behind the television series “Designing Women,” “The Golden Girls” and many other plays and TV shows. Jessie Hope, Nicholas Jones and Jamie Wooten are well known for southern themes in their works.

“We can all relate to these characters,” said Boyce on the characters of the play being relatable to a southern crowd. “Everyone of them we know and associate with everyday of our lives. It’s a well written show in the sense that they’re not characters, they’re real people and they’re fun because we know them.”

The actors playing the five characters are Dianne Daniels, Becky Johnson, Lynnie McClure, Amy Light and Gabrielle Metz.

“It’s going to be a fun time,” said Boyce. “They [the audience] will definitely have two hours to leave their cares at the doors and sit back and enjoy a fun show.”

The play will have daily showings on April 19 though 22, with another string of shows from April 25 to 28.

Tickets can be purchased online through the council’s Web site (fultondaleartscouncil.org/events) or at the Iberia Bank in Fultondale. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students.
