Sometimes, you just have to take matters into your own hands.
Tyler Pelkey has been doing a lot of that lately.
And on Friday night, he came through once again in the clutch for Mortimer Jordan, Hitting a 3-point shot from the Corner with :43.1 seconds left to put the Blue Devils ahead for good, on their way to a 61-53 win over A.P. Brewer in the AHSAA Class 5A sub-regional.
The Devils had led by as many as 11 points in the second half, but the Patriots clawed their way back little by little, and guard Joey Lawrence hit a 3-pointer tied the game at 51-51 with about two minutes left.
The teams traded baskets, then Pelkey’s long bomb sent the home crowd into a frenzy, and ended up sending his team to this morning’s Northeast Regional Tournament berth against Athens.
After Pelkey’s bucket on the assist from Mark Louis, the Patriots — who ran out to a 20-6 lead in the first quarter on five treys, only to see Jordan turn up the defensive pressure and take the lead just before halftime — were forced to foul. Lawrence was called for an intentional foul, which sent Ben Hardiman to the line for two foul shots.
Pelkey ended up as the game’s leading scorer with a season-high 29 points. He scored a dozen each in the second and fourth periods.
“He got a lot of points driving,” Blue Devils coach Lynn Elkins said. “That gave us a little bit of a match up that we enjoyed.”
Louis added 17 for the Devils.
Brandon Elder paced the Patriots with 13, and Jeffrey Davis added 12, with eight of those in the fourth quarter.
The win continued a season that Jordan boys teams have not seen since 1988. Their record improved to 18-12 going into today’s regional game.
