It’s Monday, February 13, and here’s what’s happening around metro Birmingham and the world…
Dora man sought in fatal shotting. Jefferson County Sheriff’s detectives are looking for a man regarding a shooting outside a convenience store in Forestdale. Chief Deputy Randy Christian said that Edmund Reed, 34, of Birmingham was shot and killed in the parking lot of a store in the 1000 block of Forestdale Blvd. (U.S. 78) at about 2 p.m. Sunday. They are seeking Derrick Wayne Murray, 41, of Dora in relation to the shooting. If you have information leading to Murray’s whereabouts, call the Sheriff’s Office at 325-5900.
Want to be a STAR? Sure you do, and in a few years you won’t have a choice in the matter. It’s the news STAR identification card, and it’s an enhanced version of your Aabama driver’s license or non-driver identification card. The STAR card — it stands for “safe, trusted and reliable” — has enhanced features for deterring terrorist use, and is being introduced to comply with the federal REAL ID Act of 2005. It looks just like the current Alabama driver’s license, but has a gold star in the corner. Starting in 2014, you’ll need a STAR Card, or a current passport, to board airplanes or enter federal buildings. The new cards will be issued later this year.
Whitney Houston, 1963-2012. The investigation continues into the death of pop-music superstar Whitney Houston, who was found dead inside her suite at the Beverly Hilton hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif. on Saturday. Houston was found unconcious not long before music producer Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy Awards party at the hotel; ironically, it was at that same party in 1983 where Davis introduced Houston as an up-and-coming singer. The Beverly Hills coronoer conducted an autopsy, but has not released his findings pending a toxicology report that could take weeks to complete. Houston has battled alcohol and drug addictions for years. Sunday’s Grammys ceremony was in large part dedicated to her memory and was largely devoid of the over-the-top performances of past years — except for a controversial somewhat-bizarre set by Nicky Minaj that evoked an exorcism, and which was reportedly blacked out partially by some CBS affiliate stations.
Sports, and lots of it: Tharp gets his first major victory. Gardendale pro bass angler Randall Tharp has been on a roll for the past year, but had not yet won an event on either the BASS or FLW top-tier tours. That streak ended Sunday when he ran away from the field in the Walmart FLW Tour season-opening event on Lake Okeechobee in Florida. Tharp led from the first day, and bagged more than 100 pounds over four days on the water, topping his nearest competitor by more than 23 pounds. Now everyone on the tour knows why Okeechobee is Tharp’s home away from home. He pockets $125,000 for the victory…. Krista Stricklin scored 28 points, and in doing so climbed to ninth on the state’s all-time girls’ career scoring list, as No. 6 Hayden defeated Mortimer Jordan 45-34 to win the Class 5A Area 11 championship Saturday afternoon on the Wildcats’ home floor. Tonight, Corner will host Dora in the Class 4A Area 11 boys’ championship game at 6:30, while the Gardendale girls travel to Minor to take on the Tigers in the 6A Area 11 title game. The Rockets advanced with an overtime thriller Thursday over Jackson-Olin…. UAB will be getting a new conference home. Both CBS and ESPN are reporting that Conference-USA and the Mountain West Conference will dissolve and form a new combined league, which has no name as of yet. The new conference would not only have a championship football game, but also semifinals — a first for any NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision conference.
Weather: Sleet possible. There’s a slight chance you may see a little sleet or snow mixed with rain later today and tonight, but nothing to mess up travel too much. In Cullman County northward, though, the National Weather Service has issued a winter weather advisory, warning of possible moderate sleet with accumulations of less than half an inch, which could cause slick roads. The precip turns to all rain after midnight, with lows in the mid 30s. Highs Tuesday should be in the mid 50s, warming to the mid 60s by Wednesday. Thursday will bring showers and storms with a slight chance of severe weather.
